As part of of this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Chile’s foreign minister Roberto Ampuero participated in today’s meeting of foreign and trade ministers. During the occasion, Ampuero presented Chile’s ideas for next year’s summit, which will take place in Santiago. The summit this year, hosted by Papua New Guinea, will culminate during the weekend, when heads of state, among them Sebastián Piñera, will meet.
Papua New Guinea hosts the 2019 APEC summit under the motto of “Harnessing Inclusive Opportunities, Embracing the Digital Future.” APEC comprises 21 Pacific rim countries forming a free trade area. The motto shows how much these countries, big and small, care about attuning their economies to digitalization.
According to a foreign ministry press release, the ministers today discussed topics such as inclusive growth, increasing connectivity, and sustainability.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ampuero presented the pillars of next year’s summit, hosted by Chile in Santiago. The motto “Connecting People, Building the Future” underlines the sustained concern over digitalization.
Specifically, Chile’s representative suggested to base debates on four pillars:
- Digital Society
- Industrial Revolution 4.0
- Women and Growth
- Sustainable, Comprehensive and Inclusive Growth.
Laudably, Ampuero also referred to problems like illegal fishing that damage the Pacific Ocean and call for multilateral solutions, saying “we must not forget that it is the Pacific Ocean that unites us.”
He added, “we want to make sure that APEC continues to build on the important reputation it has established to foster ideas and initiatives that will eventually have a global impact.”
