Copa Chile 2018: an overview of fixtures, top scorers and previous winners

SANTIAGO – Although most eyes are on the World Cup right now, another tournament is going on in Chile. As Chileans still grieve over their absence in Russia, Copa Chile began in April. The winner will receive not only the Cup, but also qualify for next year’s Conmebol Copa Libertadores.

This year, the 39th edition of the tournament counts with the participation of second division professional clubs and third division A-B clubs. So far, the competition is in the eighth-finals and some teams have already qualified for the quarter-finals. Among them is Club Deportivo Palestino, which defeated Unión la Calera 2-0. Palestino’s contender in the quarter-finals will result from the Cobresal vs Ñublense match.

Universidad de Chile also qualified for the quarters, having defeated Colchagua CD 4-0. The club will thus face either Cobreloa or San Marcos de Arica. Another team which made it to the quarter-finals is Deportes Valdivia. It will face Club Atlético Barnechea, which also qualified. Audax Italiano La Florida’s contender will be the winner of the Deportes Copiapó vs Huachipato game.

Top scorers

So far, the top scorers of Copa de Chile are Sebastián Romero from Cobreloa (5 goals), Gustavo Lanaro from Deportes Valdivia, Iván Ledezma from Audax Italiano and Lucas Simón from Cobreloa, (4 goals each). The winner of the tournament will receive the Copa Chile and qualify for the 2019 Conmebol Copa Libertadores. Moreover, the winner will also participate in the Supercopa de Chile, where the champion will face the 2018 first division winner.

Colo Colo won the Copa Chile a record five times (1958, 1974, 1994, 1996 and 2016). Second is Santiago Wanderers with two wins (1959 and 1961), the same as Palestino (1975 and 1977) and Union Española (1992 and 1993), Universidad Católica (1995 and 2011), Universidad Concepción (2008 and 2014), Deportes Iquique (2010 and 2013), and Universidad de Chile (2012 and 2015).
