Creators in Quarantine: Vicente Saiz

In almost every aspect of our lives, the past weeks have been amongst the most taxing in modern history. COVID-19 has infiltrated nearly all aspects of our daily routines, from our work and family schedules to friend dates and hobbies. Partial to full lockdowns have caused the closure of restaurants, retail stores, and public entertainment venues that host galleries, concerts, sporting events, plays, conventions, films, and more.

Arts organizations continue to struggle with the disastrous cost and ramification of closing their buildings, and freelance artists of all trades are adapting to their careers and incomes being on hold. Despite these challenges, Chilean artists have devised innovative and resourceful expressions of creativity and resilience as performers of all disciplines transition to e-commerce, host online classes and performances, and offer virtual tours of art exhibitions.

In this series, we will meet Chilean artists who are adapting their lives and careers amid a global pandemic. Learn about what has inspired their artistic journey, the challenges they’re learning to overcome, and how they find support in their communities.

Meet Vicente Saiz

1. Can you tell me about your work, and how you began your professional journey?

I am a songwriter, guitarist, and singer. I play the guitar in a rock band, Von Dippel, and I have a solo project titled Vicente Saiz. I also perform in ArtFood PZP for corporate events and in Son d’Amour, a wedding band.

I began playing music young age but graduated from law school and became a lawyer. I worked in that field for four years, but my passion for music began taking over until it became my full-time occupation. I currently study Music Composition at ProJazz Institute.

I released two studio EPs with my solo project: Manos en el Barro and Por Estallar. In 2019, Von Dippel released a single titled “Las Desobedientes” along with a music video.

2. How has the quarantine affected your business? Have you needed to postpone or cancel appointments?

Quarantine has been a devastating blow for musicians and artists in general. All corporate events and shows have been canceled, and these gigs are a primary source of income. Von Dippel was about to release a new single, and I was planning on releasing a new 12 track album with a live concert. These events are, of course, postponed. Since no one knows for sure when the health crisis will end – or when will it be safe to resume social gatherings – rescheduling and planning events have been particularly challenging.

3. How can the community support you from home? Are you working on products available for purchase online? Do you have gift cards available that can be used at a later date?

There is a quick and easy way to help any artist, and it is free: like and share their work on social media! It takes seconds and won’t cost you one peso. Show the content to a friend who might be interested – these actions always help, especially in these times.

I am working on the second release of a covers album that was recorded some years ago but could not release properly for copyright reasons. I have been re-recording, remixing and remastering the music and hope to make it available on Spotify and YouTube by the end of April or the beginning of May.

4. What is the best way to connect with you online?
