SANTIAGO – Raúl Meza, who represents dozens of inmates of Punta Peuco prison, has created his own political party. After resigning from Renovación Nacional (National Renewal) Meza started Fuerza Nacional. According to him, “to defend national values and the country´s history”.

Raúl Meza, who represents human rights violators from the Pinochet-era, resigned from Renovación Nacional (RN) party to start a new political party called Fuerza Nacional (National Strength). Meza explained to daily La Tercera that he missed the loyalty needed to remain member of the RN.

Party in the ideology of Pinochet

Meza, who recently criticized President Piñera for his politics regarding the Punta Peuco inmates, explained he felt the need for starting Fuerza Nacional, in the ideology of the military dictatorship of Pinochet, so the party can bring back “patriotic, libertarian and nationalist values that inspired and motivated the military government”.

Meza, who will chair Fuerza Nacional, ended by stating that his party will be about “defending national values and the country´s history”.

In a declaration, Meza laid out the main principles of the party, among them ´unconditional support to the Armed Forces´. This support echoes throughout the entire program, often referring to the role of the army during the Pinochet dictatorship.

Meza calls the members of Fuerza Nacional “representatives who will save Chile from an intolerant and violent left who want to destroy those armed institutions that already liberated us in the past from revolutionary totalitarianism”.

Controversial invitations for launch

According to La Tercera, Meza will invite Lucía Hiriart, the widow of former dictator Pinochet, to the launch of his political party. Jorge, the grandson of General Fernando Matthei, is expected to be part of the board of the party and other ministers from the Pinochet dictatorship are expected to also join the ranks.
